Traditional leaders in modern Africa- Carolyn Logan

The role of the traditional leaders in modern Africa.

Traditionalist VS Modernists

Traditional chiefs and elders the true representative of their people, still essential to politics on the continent and building democracies or is the antithetical to democracy ?????

"Tradition": as a resource to strengthen the community an polity, and to overcome the many failures of the Western liberal democratic model as it has been applied in Africa.

The struggle between the two for political power and legitimacy is seen as a zero-sum game.

The paper finds that African societies are often quite adept an integrating seemingly incompatible institutional structures, such as traditional institutions.

How traditional authorities "fit" into a modern political systems.

One of the essential missing components , has been the lack of empirical evidence concerning popular perceptions of these leaders.

The surveys help us to answer the claims and to understand popular perceptions of traditional leaders.

In the perception of ordinary Africans, it seems that democracy and chiefs can indeed co-exist.

What is really traditional ??

Conclusions: As my opinion i think that both of this postures have correct argues, but i don't know which one is the good, because everyone has a point view, of what they see in their countries, but i believe, that the institutions has to change because its their opportunity to compete and modernize, so they can reach a good development and this is reflected in wealth.
They also have to take the chances and the risk that West are giving them.
But also the modern or elected systems have to correct problems such as corruption, insecurity, education to reach a good label of democratization so that let have the trust of the people.
